Why are tefilin so important in the Jewish religion?
Tefilin is one of the most important mitzvot (precepts) of the Torah. It has been observed and cherished for thousands of years, right up to the present day by the Jewish people. The Torah mentions this mitzvah more than once, but most explicitly in Deut. 6: 8 « And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for ornaments between your eyes. » The Tefilin prayer must be recited every morning except on Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
The Tefilin consists of two small leather boxes attached to leather straps. The two boxes each contain four verses from the Torah inscribed on parchment.
One of the boxes is placed on the arm so that it rests against the heart and the leather strap is wrapped around the hand around the middle finger. The other case is placed on the head, above the forehead. In this way, our attention is directed to the head, the heart and the hand.
