What is the significance of this Jewish accessory?
According to Jewish tradition, an eternal light (Ner Tamid) is to be hung above the ark in every synagogue. It is often associated with the menorah, the seven-branched candlestick that stood before the Temple in Jerusalem. It is also associated with the altar that stood before the Holy Ark. Our sages have interpreted the Ner Tamid as a symbol of God’s eternal and imminent Presence in our communities and in our lives. Where once the Ner Tamid was an oil lamp, as was the menorah that stood outside the Temple in Jerusalem, today most are powered by gas or electric bulbs.
The ner tamid is also associated with the days of Azkara (remembrance of the deceased). Each year, on the date that marks the death of a loved one, the Jewish religion asks that a candle be lit in their honor. A nice way to commemorate his memory.
