Sukkot commemorates the 40 years the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land after escaping slavery in Egypt. Today, the sukkah is a reminder that only G-d creates a real sense of security and protection.

Originally, Sukkot was one of Judaism’s three pilgrimage holidays, along with Passover and Shavuot. But when the Temple in Jerusalem, the destination of pilgrims, was destroyed for the second and final time, the holidays were increasingly celebrated in local synagogues. Yet the pilgrimage is an essential part of Judaism.

After all, it was one of G-d’s commandments to Moses that Jews make pilgrimages to Jerusalem three times a year. A popular contemporary destination is the Wailing Wall, the last remaining part of the Temple.

The etrog is one of the four species that are used in the week-long Sukkot prayers.

The Sukkot prayer consists of taking four types of plants: an etrog (a citron fruit), a palm branch, a myrtle branch and a willow branch, and rejoicing with them. (Leviticus 23:39-40.) People rejoice with them by waving or shaking them.
