Why do we light a Hanukkah during Hanukkah week?
According to Jewish tradition, after the Maccabees defeated the Greeks, there was only enough oil to burn for one day in the Temple. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days. The lighting of the Chanukah menorah commemorates this miracle.
The best time to light the menorah is at dusk. The menorah should remain lit for at least 30 minutes after dark. On Friday afternoon, the menorah should be lit 18 minutes before sunset.
Today, hanukiahs are available in a wide range of shapes, styles, sizes and materials. You will find them in silver, metal, glass, wood… All made by Israeli artists from Jerusalem, specialized in Judaica art.
